Real Ale Ray left this review about The York

This was our last pub on our crawl and what a real treat this pub was. The interior was traditional and tastefully finished, I especially liked the lounge area with the curved bay on the far right of the entrance. The service at the bar was efficient and beer quality was up there.
Six ales on handpump Kirkstall Three Swords and Bitter, Five Points XPA, Thornbridge Bowie, Abbeydale Cloud Peak and Triple Point Zephyr.

There are nine hand pumps available here, with three ciders at the time of our recent visit and six beers. Two were from Dancing Duck, one each from Pictish, Concertina, True North and Phoenix. While this is an admirable selection in terms of interesting beers from mostly local(ish) breweries, I often find when I come here that nearly all the beers are around the 4.5 to 5% mark, and on this occasion the lowest strength beer was Spotland Gold at 4.1%.

Contrary to the previous reviewer, I find the York to be very food oriented - perhaps it's something to do with the time of day. The 20% off for NUS card holders certainly attracts students, especially those with parents in tow, so I often find there's hardly anywhere for a drinker to sit, stand or lean. However, this is slightly nit-picking, and after some of the bland beers I'd been drinking on my crawl through Fulwood and Crosspool it was a pleasure to have Concertina's Bengal Tiger tickle my taste buds.

A classic Victorian building occupying a prominent corner of Broomhill,The York has been transformed into an upmarket ale house with gastro style food by The True North Brew Co who also own other pubs in Sheffield namely The Forum,Common Room,Old House and Broadfield.
Through the entrance lobby ,the interior is L shaped and open plan with a lot of wood panelling, parquet flooring, church pew style chairs, leather bound benches and traditional tables with the large picture windows give a lot of light, creating a contemporary feel yet still retaining an upmarket pub atmosphere.
There were seven handpumps for ale with on my visit Brew Co Anvil Porter,Barnsley Acorn Bitter,Raw JR Best,Phoenix Navvy,Black Iris Bitter,Bradfield Farmer's Blonde and an exceptional Abbeydale Deception at £2.80pp served ,by default,in a dimple handle glass.Quite rightly the pub is in the 2012 GBG and I was impressed by the focus on micros from the surrounding area. However that is not all, there are also two handpumped ciders (Old Rosie and Addlestone's)and a beer menu featuring many bottles from Belgium,Germany and USA ,19 single malts, various gins and even a variety of artisan teas.
The food maintains this high quality offering with gastro pricing but my wild boar sausages and mash were well worth £8.95 and there is a 20% discount if you are a NUS card holding student, many live closeby.
The tables all have a bottle of Henderson's relish to enhance the modern British menu which I thought was a nice touch, but this is still a pub for drinking in,food doesn't dominate. There is also a small decking outside at the rear for open air supping.
The pub will soon by serving their own beer ,brewed by Peter Roberts from Brew Co,and I found the whole experience a revelation.I will most definitely use it again when in the area, and it makes me want to seek out the other pubs in this enterprising chain.
