Missing Link Brewing Tap Room in East Grinstead

Paul’s review pretty much sums this place up. The tap room is a rather smart place of its type and very comfortable with some tables with benches and some comfy sofas dotted around the corners. It was busy on arrival at 4pm (so much so that the server asked if we had a reservation). Typical of these venues, and especially for one only really accessible by car, it is only open Fri-Sun, but with 10am-11pm opening on Fri-Sat and same opening but closing at 6pm on Sun. They also seem to have ad hoc Thurs evening opening for comedy nights. A food wagon was parked outside offering Nepalese street food on this occasion.

Their current beer range (photo posted) appeared to offer something for everyone and I had a pint of the Marmoset and Grivet during our hour or so stay. Beer flights seemed to be a popular choice here.

Probably a one off visit to this one for me as, whilst not far from West Hoathly, it is a decent step off the main road, I find these tap rooms interesting to tick off but I couldn’t be a regular drinker in any of them as the venues themselves feel a bit sterile. This is a good one of its type though and well worth taking in if you are in the area, hopefully on better weather days.

The Thatch in Thame

Multi-roomed gastropub owned by the same pubco as runs The James Figg further up the High Street, this hostelry being beyond the fair reaches of main drag. There's a nice 'snug' drinking area on entry dominated by a huge fireplace, but all other rooms set for dining, with two areas smaller and more intimate than the main dining area (top right from entry). Sharp's Doom Bar and locAle XT 3 on the stumps, the latter, for a fiver, was on good form (NBSS 3.5). Blackthorn's wine cellar with its wrought iron gate is still in situ which is a nice feature. Farmers Arms in Cowbridge

Directly opposite the more substantial and classy Hare & Hounds opposite. Popped in here for a quick jog down memory lane following dinner opposite. Much quieter by comparison and a more rustic and typical pub food offering. Feels like a long barn with the bar sitting between the two areas with some walking space in from there of between them. A handful of stools to sit at the bar.

Keg choices were Birra Moretti, Madri & Carling and then Guinness, with Stowford Press and Thatchers Haze for keg cider fans. On hand pump was, in comparison to the H&H, a dull choice between Doom Bar and Proper Job. I had a quick one of the latter and it was perfectly well kept.

Can’t see myself in Aberthin again any time soon, but I would choose the H&H over the FA every time.

The Orange Tree in N21

Glad to say this one just about survived the pandemic and John, the Irish Guvnor of some 27 years and counting is still at the helm.
Unfortunately it’s unbroken 28 year run in the Good Beer Guide came to an end when the local CAMRA branch didn’t include it in the 2024 guide. This is primarily because John focusses on GK beers nowadays and there’s no longer any guests. Usually it’s GK IPA, OSH and Yardbird. But the quality is usually superb and you realise what a good session beer Yardbird is when served in here and not the insipid pint experienced in a lot of GK’s own premises.
The interior is unchanged and it really does look like a time warp pub now. However the fixtures and furnishings are in desperate need of some TLC and the regulars live in hope of some new padding for the bench seats. But the bigger concern is how long a throwback back street local like this one will continue to survive in modern times.

The Alexandra Arms in Cambridge

A reasonable backstreet pub albeit somewhat modernised inside, my three Blind Mice Porterhouse Blues was a good drop. I didn't really warm to the interior despite some decent ale, worth the visit though.

Ye Olde Reine Deer Inn in Banbury

Beautiful old pub with an ornate interior. Hand pumps a plenty from Hook Norton. I had a pint of Hook Norton Mild which was decent along with a burger and chips which was reasonably priced and tasty. Well worth a visit if you're in Banbury town centre.

Disappearing and 'in peril' breweries

Having a look at a possible running order and these are my first thoughts. The Wainhouse Tavern and The Big 6 are indeed a fair way out of town and need a 15 minute bus ride to get there and then back again as there is nothing inbetween to entertain. The Cross Keys is a shorter bus ride but south of Halifax and again nothing really of interest on the walk or ride. Outside of these we have 12 other venues mentioned within the city centre (and that's not counting the two spoons ) , easily walkable between them so I personally would be inclined to stick with these and have a relaxing day in the town centre. But the Big 6 and the Cross Keys do look to be worth the effort, so open to alternative suggestions.
